This publication is focused on the cultivation of alternative crops, which are usable especially for diversification and complement the range of food ingredients. However, they have also come into their own in pharmacy, cosmetics and other fields. From the amount of worldwide used species there have been chosen some species, whose production and use in our condition has been verified. The various species of alternative crops are classified into classically structured groups: cereals, pseudocereals, legumes, oilseeds, root crops and they are assigned to a select group of medicinal plants. For each species there is given basic information about meaning and use of plants, botanical characteristics and demands for the environment. The core information are agrotechnical methodological procedures such as inclusion of the crop in crop rotations, seed and soil preparation, crop establishment and care during the vegetation, harvest, post-harvest treatment and storage. Molecular evidence of genetic diversity changes in pea (Pisum sativum L.) germplasm after long-term maintenance

Maintaining germplasm genetic integrity is a key objective of long-term ex situ conservation. Periodic regeneration, performed on limited plots with small number of individuals, increases the risk of genetic drift and genetic diversity changes. In this study, six accessions of white flowered, dry seed pea varieties (Pisum sativum L. subsp. sativum var. sativum): Bohaty´r,Klatovsky´ zeleny´, Hana´k,Moravsky´ hrotovicky´ krajovy´, Raman and Viktoria-75 and four accessions of colour flowered, fodder pea (P. sativum subsp. sativum var. arvense (L.) Poiret: Arvika,C ˇ esky´ bana´n, Moravska´ krajova´ and Nike´, representing Czechoslovak varieties and landraces, bred over the last 40–80 years, were analyzed using ten microsatellite locus specific markers. Each accession was represented by 20 individual seeds of two temporally different samples, spanning the period of 20 or 40 years. Together with intra-accession variation (except of cv. Hana´k), evidence of genetic changes, e.g. differences in allele frequencies as well as genetic composition of sample, was detected in six out of ten accessions (Arvika, Bohaty´r, C ˇ esky´ bana´n, Moravsky´ hrotovicky´ krajovy´, Moravska´ krajova´ and Raman). Evidence of genetic erosion was found in three accessions (Cˇ esky´ bana´n, Moravsky´ hrotovicky´ krajovy´ and Raman), while in another three (Arvika, Bohaty´r and Moravska´ krajova´) the level of diversity was found to have increased. Moreover in three samples of Bohaty´r (2004) and Klatovsky´ zeleny´ (1963 and 2004), low levels of heterozygosity was detected. These results demonstrate that in pea, a selfpollinating and highly homozygous plant, the danger of the loss of genetic integrity exists. There has been observed the species spectrum of pollen beetles of genus Meligethes on 26 localities in Czech Republic. The index dominance (D) was used for evaluation of representative populations of individual species. M. aeneus (Fabricius, 1787) was eudominant at all of localities. M. subaeneus Sturm, 1845 was eudominant at localities Pivonice, Lazníky, Blučina, Ţdár nad Sázavou and Zvole. M. viridescens Fabricius, 1787 was eudominant at locality Věcov. M. erythropus (Marsham, 1802) was eudominant at locality Bohdalec. M. subaeneus Sturm, 1845, M. viridescens Fabricius, 1787 and M. erythropus (Marsham, 1802) are dominant species only at some localities. článek v odborném periodiku

Genetic diversity of cultivated flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) germplasm assessed by retrotransposon-based markers

Retrotransposon segments were characterized and inter-retrotransposon amplified polymorphism (IRAP) markers developed for cultivated flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) and the Linum genus. Over 75 distinct long terminal repeat retrotransposon segments were cloned, the first set for Linum, and specific primers designed for them. IRAP was then used to evaluate genetic diversity among 708 accessions of cultivated flax. Application of Bayesian methods for clustering resulted in the robust identification of 20 clusters of accessions, which were unstratified according to origin or user type.These findings provide a basis for better flax germplasm management, core collection establishment, and exploration of diversity in breeding, as well as for exploration of the role of retrotransposons in flax genome dynamics. článek v odborném periodiku

Green Pea Variety Twinset

The crossing was carried out in 2002. The selection of individual plants was repeated every year from the F2 generation. Yield tests were performed since the F4 generation, the 2 10 m2 yield trials. Breeding line SM 441/02 was included in yield trials in the green maturity (technological maturity) and was sown (sowing density: 1,1 mil of germinating seeds per hectare) with standard varieties. The homogenization process usually takes 3 - 4 years, morphologically different and less efficient lines were excluded during the process. When needed, the reselections from yield trials were carried out. Selections of resistant plants (from F2 generation) to the powdery mildew (Erysiphe pisi) were traditionally done in the field or greenhouse after artificial inoculation with Erysiphe pisi. Selections aimed at obtaining field resistance to foot-rot complex diseases (the most important diseases) in peas were carried out practically since F3 generation using tests in infected soil. The breeding lines were tested since F4 - F6 generation, the repeated tests for resistance to fusarium race 1 and race 2 were done in a the laboratory conditions. Influence of intercropping with spring cereals on the occurrence of pea aphids (Ayrthosiphon pisum Harris, 1776) and their natural enemies in field pea (Pisum sativum L.)

Occurrences of pea aphids and their natural enemies (syrphids, mummies caused by entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria sp. and by the parasitic wasp Aphidius ervi) were compared in monocultures and mixtures of field peas and spring cereals in three seasons (2008–2010). At the beginning of colonisation, the occurrence of aphids was not substantially influenced by intercropping with cereals. However, the numbers of pea aphids located on inflorescences started to decline earlier in mixtures compared with monoculture. More syrphids (eggs + larvae) were found in mixtures than in monoculture, and more syrphid eggs were found in young aphid colonies (10 to 20 individuals) in mixtures. Intercropping did not influence the occurrence of fungal mummies (Beauveria sp.), but mixtures tended to have more aphid colonies infested by A. ervi in 2008 and 2009. článek v odborném periodiku

Morpho-colorimetric traits of Pisum seeds measured by an image analysis system

Pisum sativum L., as well as many other grain legumes has high agronomical importance connected to their use in crop rotations. Color, size and shape of seeds are very important in grading system for many crops. A total of 33 morphometric and colorimetric features of seeds of five Czech pea varieties, cultivated in four different Czech localities, were measured by image analysis and used to identify and discriminate the varieties also regarding to their cropping localities. The achieved data were used to develop a statistical classifier based on two sample sets, the training set to teach the classifier and the test sets to validate it, and determine the percentage of varietal identification. Molekulární detekce genu rezistence hrachu k viru mozaiky přenosné semenem (PSbMV)

Pea seed-borne mosaic virus (PSbMV) belongs among the most frequent viral pathogens causing severe losses in field pea and other legumes. These losses might be prevented by growth of resistant varieties. Reliable markers of viral resistances were not available until now. Recently eIF4E resp. eIF4E(iso) genes were identified, corresponding to sbm-1 (LG VI) and sbm-2 (LG II) loci, governing recessive resistance to potyviruses, including PSbMV. We identified alelles of eIF4E gene in selected pea genotypes, including all used resistance donors. Based on sequences we have selected and verified PCR-based markers, allowing 100% precise identification, including distinction of heterozygotes. Thus this method in contrast to tedious virological and imunological tests offers faster, cheaper and precise results directly usable in pea breeding. certifikovaná metodika

In field trials the susceptibility of colour- and white-flowering faba bean varieties against cercospora leaf spot (Cercospora zonata) was determined. In green-mature stage the white-flowering varieties Albi and Merlin were attacked at scores 4.2 and 3.6, respectively. The colour-flowering varieties Merkur and AGT 5/13 were attacked at scores 7.0 and 7.2, respectively. At harvest time the attachment of white-flowering varieties Merlin and Albi with diseases complex was 85.5 % and 60 % respectively in comparison with attachment 30 % and 16 % of colour-flowering varieties Merkur and AGT 5/13, respectively. The viability of Cercospora zonata conidia is low (3–5 days) and the fungus is soil borne.
