Applied and Basic Research for Agriculture
Research for Agriculture
We have been conducting agricultural research in Šumperk since 1942. We combine this long-standing tradition with modern scientific methods to develop solutions for contemporary agriculture.
Research at Agritec focuses primarily on plant genetic resources, breeding, biotechnology, crop production technologies and integrated plant protection. A significant part of our work is devoted to grain legumes, flax, hemp and caraway, while we also conduct research on other agricultural crops.
Genetic Resources and Plant Breeding
Plant genetic diversity is an important source of traits that may be crucial for future breeding and agricultural practice. We therefore study and conserve genetic resources of grain legumes and flax and carry out their detailed characterization. This work is linked to the Czech National Programme on Plant Genetic Resources and to FAO activities.
Our research also employs genetic and breeding methods, biotechnological approaches, biochemical and molecular markers, and image analysis. These methods enable us to characterize genetic resources more precisely and to apply the knowledge gained in their study and in plant breeding.
Crop Production Technologies and Plant Protection
A good variety is only one part of successful crop production. We therefore also study production technologies for pea, faba bean, lupin, flax, hemp and caraway, seeking approaches that meet the requirements of modern agriculture.
Integrated plant protection and research into plant resistance to diseases are also important areas of our work. We focus particularly on fungal pathogens and their interactions with host plants, and investigate ways to improve the resistance and protection of grain legumes, flax, caraway, hemp and other field crops.
From Research to Practice
For us, research does not end when results are obtained in the laboratory or experimental field. The purpose of applied research is to translate new knowledge into approaches that can be used in plant breeding, crop production, plant protection and other areas of agricultural practice.
Alongside applied research, we also conduct basic research that helps us better understand plant characteristics, genetic variability and interactions between plants, their environment and pathogens. The combination of long-term experience, biological material, laboratory methods and field experiments forms the foundation of Agritec's research activities.
